Get linked to a campaign encouraging me to sign a petition/email my MP etc.
Do so.
Petition/email campaign is run by a campaigning organisation whose goals I broadly support.
Think “I should support <cause> more often.”
Check “sign up to our mailing list” box.
Recieve a couple of emails which I read, but don’t do anything about.
Stop opening emails. Start marking as read and archiving reflexively.
Never get around to unsubscribing because the two keypresses/email to mark as read and archive are less hassle than finding the unsubscribe link (probably amongst some mangled semi-HTML that’s supposedly the text/plain part of the multipart/alternative), clicking, hoop-jumping, confirming.
Never set up a mail filter rule to auto-archive/delete for the same reason.
GOTO 1
I do this far too often (about half my incoming mail is this sort of thing). Yes, I’m a terrible human being.
NASA began operations on 1st October 1958. It took less than 11 years for the to go from no human launch capability to a crewed landing on the Moon, on July 20th 1969. It took 42 years and 1 day to go from men on the moon to no human launch capability, with the final landing of the last Space Shuttle today.
OBAMA: So people can have philosophical views [about Bradley Manning] but I can’t conduct diplomacy on an open source [basis]… That’s not how the world works. And if you’re in the military… And I have to abide by certain rules of classified information. If I were to release material I weren’t allowed to, I’d be breaking the law. We’re a nation of laws! We don’t let individuals make their own decisions about how the laws operate. He broke the law.
